Edwin Aalders

Since 2004 Mr Aalders has held the position of Director of the International Emission Trading Association and since November 2007 the Acting CEO of the Voluntary Carbon Standard Association. As Director of the International Emission Trading Association (IETA) Mr Aalders was responsible for the UNFCCC process such as the CDM & JI as well as the voluntary market. Mr Aalders is an elected member of JI Accreditation Panel and on the roster of experts for the Methodology & Accreditation Panel Expert of the CDM.
Edwin Aalders has an engineering degree in Tropical Forestry from the LIAC, the Netherlands and a Masters Degree in Forestry from the University of Oxford. He has over 15 years of experience as an assessor in Environmental Auditing (ISO 14 000), Organic Farming and SQF 2000 systems and as a Lead Assessor in Forest Management Certification, ISO 9000 and Climate Change Programmes.
In March 2007 he became partner of Probus Capital as Technical Director responsible for the development and design of Probus Sigma a new and objective method to index companies level of sustainability. From 1998 to 2004 Mr Aalders was the Cooperate Global Business Development Manager of SGS for the Marine Stewardship Council, Organic, EUREPGAP and Carbon Offset Verification Service as well as the Operational Manager in the SGS the Netherlands for the Forest Stewardship Council Programme. As SGS Global Business Development Manager, Mr Aalders was actively involved in the development of the above mentioned programmes and those of individual client specific certification programmes in Wise Management of Natural Resources. Mr Aalders worked throughout the developing and developed countries and in particular Latin America, Africa and Australasia.

Gus Atri is a chemist by training. After working in Humberside County Analyst Laboratory as a Senior Chemist for nearly 10 years, he joined northern Foods in 1986 and have held a number of roles in the Group Technical Services and currently employed as Environmental Affairs Controller. His role is to help develop a range of environmental policies for Northern Foods.
He is currently chairman of DEFRA Food Industry Sustainability Strategy Waste Champions Group and the past chairman of the UK Food and Drink Federation Waste Topic Group. He was also a member of a group that developed East Midlands Regional Waste Strategy and chaired Nottingham Energy Partnership Business Task Group charged to develop means of reducing carbon emissions in the city of Nottingham.

Bill Bartlett

Bill Bartlett was appointed McCain Corporate Affairs Director in July 2006. As part of his role Bartlett heads up the McCain Corporate Social Responsibility programme, and is responsible for co-ordinating the company’s progressive journey towards an ever more sustainable business model. The CSR programme examines the businesses relationship and impact on the environment, marketplace, workplace and the community.
Prior to this Corporate Affairs role, Bartlett was sales director of McCain Food Service for seven years and has been with the company for 19 years. Bartlett joined in 1989 as a territory manager and looked after a region in the Midlands. Bartlett soon progressed to regional manager and national account manager and in 1996 was seconded to central Europe. Bartlett returned in 1998 to run the sales function in Food Service before taking up his current role.
During his time at McCain, Bartlett has embraced the need to change and adapt quickly and bring innovative solutions to its business processes.

Prior to joining Musgrave Retail Partners, Jonathon was Senior Food Technologist with Asda.
Externally he is Chairman of the Society of Food Hygiene and Technology and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Her specific focus on vendor environmental management and performance, ethical trading and specific product policies such as timber, chemicals and climate change ensure that B&Q can offer customers ethically sourced and sustainable solutions to home improvement. She is now focusing on the company’s commitment to One Planet Living and how B&Q can enable customers to achieve one planet living in their homes and gardens. She has been with B&Q for nearly 3 years.
Prior to joining B&Q Rachel worked in the paper industry for M-real at their office paper-recycling mill in Kent where her work focused on product development and environmental management.

Myrtille Danse is the Head of the Market & Networks Division of the Plant Research Group of the Agricultural Economics Research Institute in The Hague, The Netherlands. Myrtille has a MSc BA with emphasis on Strategic Management. During the last 15 years she has been working in Latin Amerika, Africa, Asia and The Netherlands on sustainable chain development projects, mainly within the food production and processing sector. Her research interests are on innovative governance structures aimed at the sustainable development of international agro-chains. Some of the research programs she is currently involved in as a senior researcher are; the development of a calculation methodology for CO2 labeling of horticultural products, the sustainable sourcing and marketing of fresh products by the retail sector both in Europe as well as Asia, a multi-stakeholder initiative for the development of a Code of Practice to stimulate the sustainable development of the Ethiopian floriculture sector.

The environment and sustainability are key to a number of sourcing strategies Michael is involved in, especially fruit production, where GSK has worked with farmers and growers for the last 70 years. Michael is involved throughout the whole supply chain from plant breeding, for new varieties to withstand the changes to the environment, through to processing, which also incorporates trials in Asia and Australasia, where corporate social responsibility is taken very seriously.

Professor Gareth Edwards-Jones

Gareth was brought up on a farm in North Wales. He studied biology at Manchester University for his first degree. This was followed by completing a PhD in ecology at Imperial College, London. After completing his PhD he did some work for British Sugar on decision support systems, followed by a year with a commercial computer company. In 1990 he became Senior Bioeconomist in the SAC, Edinburgh and progressed to become head of the Rural Resource Management Dept in SAC in 1995. In 1998 he took the Chair in Agriculture and Land Use at the University of Wales, Bangor. His research interests are broad and include sustainable food systems, impact of climate change on agriculture and land use, economics of conservation and farmer decision making. He is also actively involved in agricultural development in Wales. Gareth was a member of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides between 2000 and 2005, and is currently on the Scientific Advisory Panel for Natural England and the 2020 vision group of the Welsh Assembly.

Jochen Gassner is Director of the Climate Neutral department at First Climate. His responsibilities encompass the development of international and national VER markets, the design of climate neutral products and services, and the consulting of private and public sector clients.
Before joining First Climate, he worked as Group Environmental Manager at Borealis and as Environmental Consultant for a number of industry sectors. Jochen has several years of experience in environmental and sustainability consulting as well as corporate sustainability management at industry level. He studied environmental engineering at the Leoben University of Mining and Metallurgy, Austria and holds a PhD in sustainability research from Graz University of Technology, Austria.

Richard Heathcote graduated in Zoology & Biochemistry from Hull and then gained an MSc in Freshwater Hydrobiology from Cardiff. Richard has previously worked for Bass Brewers, Smiths Crisps and Thames Water in a variety of IT related roles before joining Bulmers in 1988 as an IT Project Manager. In 1997 Richard left IT and moved into a line management role as Production Planning Manager for Bulmers, and after two years moved into a change management/business development role, focussing on supply chain design, before taking up his current post of Sustainable Development Manager in 2001. In this role Richard looks after all aspects of sustainable development for Bulmers and increasingly S&N, ranging from issues of community investment and responsible drinking through to renewable energy, water recycling and alternative uses of by-products. Richard also works closely with the Bulmer Foundation (www.bulmerfoundation.org.uk) on Herefordshire related work, with colleagues across the S&N group on wider corporate responsibility matters, and chairs the National Association of Cidermakers sustainable development committee.

John will present Fonterra's work under the NZ strategy to develop a methodology for carbon footprinting for dairy products and share with you the key drivers for this work. This work aims to measure Fonterra’s carbon emissions across its complete supply chain for its major products and identify areas that require targeted programmes for reduction. It complements other sustainability initiatives that are being incorporated in all aspects of Fonterra's business.

Andrew Jenkins

After graduating in Environmental Science in 1977, Andrew has worked in product and packaging design management and development for several major manufacturing and retailing organisations including the Storehouse Group. He joined The Boots Group plc. in 1994. As a member of the Quality & CSR Support team Andrew's role is to advise product marketing and development groups on sustainable development issues. His work includes advising the development of the company Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy and the introduction of compliance systems and sustainable product design strategies covering the wide portfolio of Boots products. Andrew represents the company on several trade association committees and was Boots representative in the development of the Sigma guidelines for integrating sustainable development into business. This has now continued with work on the EU Roundtable on Sustainable Development standards and representation on the Bsi committee responsible for BS8900 Guidance for Managing Sustainable Development. His work also includes developing external partnerships in the area of sustainable development with trade associations, academic institutions and organisations such as Forum for the Future.

Prior to M&S she worked as a consultant for PA Consulting, focusing on sustainability in chemicals and consumer products. This included a wide variety of work from developing sustainability strategies for businesses to commercialisation of low carbon technology and product carbon foot printing.
Prior to consulting, Carmel worked for ICI in Germany and the UK in production and supply chain roles. Her background is in chemical engineering.

Mike Mitchell

Mike Mitchell first got involved with seafood when he joined Ross Foods in 1981 and since this time has become specialised in the field of seafood technical standards. More recently, Mike has been involved in developing management tools for the Young’s and Findus businesses to help put their responsible seafood sourcing approaches into practice. He was a key author of Young’s/Findus ‘Ten Principles of Responsible Fish Procurement’ and also of the audit mechanism which enables those principles to be put into practice. He accepted the newly created position as Head of Seafood Sustainability for the FoodVest Group during 2007.
Mike serves on a number of advisory bodies for the fish industry including several working groups for the Seafish Industry Authority; the Organic Food Federation Aquaculture Standards Committee, the Food & Drink Federation Whitefish Committee and also for the group advising AIPCE (the EU Fish Processors Association) on illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing.

Thomas Mooney is Senior Vice President for Sustainable Growth at FIJI Water, one of the leading premium bottled water companies in the world. Mr. Mooney oversees the company’s sustainability program that encompasses making FIJI Water the first “carbon negative” product in the bottled water industry, saving the largest rainforest in Fiji through a partnership with Conservation International and the people of Fiji, reducing the amount of packaging in FIJI Water products by 20% over the next three years, and advocating for an expansion of curbside and consumer incentive programs to boost recycling rates across the entire beverage industry.
Prior to this position Mr. Mooney served as FIJI Water’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development and later as Vice President of International Operations. Before joining FIJI Water, Mr. Mooney held a number of leadership positions with Procter & Gamble, Kellogg, and Booz Allen Hamilton in the United States and in Latin America.
Mr. Mooney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering, with Honors, from Purdue University. He later earned a Master in Business Administration degree, with High Distinction, from the Harvard Business School where he co-founded the Harvard Sustainable Development Society.

Mr Rowsome is Environmental Manager for the Carrefour Group, a position he acquired in 2002. The Carrefour Group is the leading retailer in Europe and 2nd worldwide. In his role Mr Rowsome is responsible for Group sustainability reporting, environmental project management in the fields of merchandise, logistics, supply chain and store activities as well as communication to socially responsible investors and rating agencies on the Group’s performance.
Prior to this Mr Rowsome was Environmenal Affairs Manager with Philips Consumer Communications. Mr Rowsome worked on product and packaging eco-design, competitor benchmarking and management of health issues related to mobile telephony.
Mr Rowsome obtained his Bachelor of Honours Degree in Geography from Leeds University in 1997.

Paul Smith is the Carbon Footprinting and Labelling Project Leader for LRQA. He is a Chartered Environmentalist, Full Member of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment and registered Principal Environmental Auditor.
Formerly, as EMS Assessment Manager, he maintained the LRQA UK environmental product accreditations and managed a multi-disciplinary team of systems assessors undertaking assessment and verification against the Acorn Scheme, ISO14001, EMAS, CER, CSR and GHG ETS, across a full scope of sectors.
His extensive environmental management experience and credentials have been gained from a career spanning more than thirty years in regulatory, industrial and consulting sectors. He now brings this authoritative knowledge to the field of Carbon Footprinting and Labelling where he continues to apply his practical skills in the development and interpretation of standards, and in assessment and verification of LRQA clients.

Marie-Louise Ter Beek

Marie-Louise ter Beek is the UK Environment Manager for McDonalds. She leads the environment department at McDonalds to minimise the impact of waste, energy, water and packaging by its 57,000 staff and 1200 restaurants in the UK. Marie-Louise previously worked for London Remade, an organisation working in the area of recycling and creating environmental solutions. Her role as project manager was in green procurement specialising in sustainable construction, and waste minimisation advising on projects such as Barts and the London hospital. Prior to that Marie-Louise worked as a environmental consultant in her home of Australia on biodiversity research, land degradation and regeneration through direct seeding operations. Originally graduating with a Environmental Horticulture degree, she grew up working in her family hydroponic lettuce business, which gave her a firm grounding of private sector business for her role in the food industry at McDonalds.

Ian joined Cadbury in the summer of 1996 as an ambitious young graduate chemical engineer. Thrust straight into the world of production management he quickly discovered the scale of the Cadbury Bournville operation when for his first appointment he was asked to manage a production line employing over 200 people per shift making and packing easter eggs. following a successful spell in manufacturing Ian moved to take up a role in the UK corporate engineering team working across the manufacturing sites on a range of projects including amongst other things energy conservation, production optimisation and commissioning an effluent plant. Ian's next change of role saw him take up position as manager of the research and development facility at Bournville followed by a move into project management where he worked on a number of capital projects. Having achieved chartered engineer status Ian's last engineering role was as a senior process development engineer exploring alternative technologies for a variety of business processes until in 2002 he moved to become Environment manager for the Cadbury UK & Ireland business. In 2004 Ian was appointed to the position of Environment manager for the Europe Middle East and Africa region responsible for raising levels of Environmental performance and capabilities across the region which kept him busy until November 2007 when he was appointed to his current role as global Head of Environment at Cadbury Schweppes and asked to lead the Purple Goes Green sustainability programme.

Alison is a senior analyst at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and leads the development and implementation of the New Zealand strategy on carbon footprinting for the land-based primary sectors. Her background is in international environmental law and chemistry.The NZ Government are working in partnership with the NZ primary sector to develop internationally recognised, robust and transparent carbon footprint methodologies. Methodologies are first being developed at a sector specific level. The first tranche of projects, covering around 65% of NZ's primary exports are carbon footprint methodologies for kiwifruit, wine, dairy products, forestry products, and lamb. This presentation will outline the background to the work being undertaken, current progress and a discussion on the importance of this work to New Zealand both in responding to climate change but also in providing a platform to look more widely at other sustainability issues. The presentation will also discuss the need for transparency at an international level in verifying carbon footprints and some of the practical difficulties that need to be considered in developing carbon footprint methodologies.

John Wild leads the Carbon Trust’s Product Footprint Labelling Project at Morphy Richards. John’s career in engineering, strategic development and business change has been in several industry sectors and countries – ranging from steel and oil production to manufacturing and consultancy. He has worked in Australia, the Middle East and Europe. One common denominator in his work has always been the reduction of excessive consumption and the minimisation of waste. At Morphy Richards, John has now added the ‘advancement of sustainability’.
